Happy Almost Shark Week!! This Sunday the 22nd, Discovery Channel is airing its annual Shark Week, and I’m pretty pumped. If you’ve followed me for a while, then you know it’s not unusual for me to give a shout out to this holiday. And yes, it really feels like a holiday for me and my family, because we’re a little weird. And one thing I love is seeing the fun Shark Week Food ideas.
I haven’t done a round up of Shark Week Food inspiration for you before, and now felt like the perfect time. I usually like to keep my shark-inspired food pretty subtle, but it’s fun to look at the more crafty varieties.
First off, let’s talk about Shark Week a bit, because it’s the right thing to do. Starting on Sunday we’re experiencing the 30th Anniversary of Shark Week, which is pretty mind blowing. I’ve honestly loved sharks for most of my life, ever since Jaws terrified the $#!t out of me as a kid. Then in 2015, my mom and I got to see the original in the movie theater for its 40th anniversary.
So to me, Jaws is one thing we have to thank for giving us this holiday. It brought sharks, especially great whites, into our lives in a bigger-than-life way. Granted that Peter Benchley and Steven Spielberg made the shark out to be a huge monster, but in reality they’re such a complex and mysterious creature.
Shark Week is the chance to learn a little more about this species, which seems so secretive after all these years. And it’s also an opportunity to witness shark breaches, see people in cages getting as close as possible, and also scientists tagging and researching them. I find it all completely fascinating. Plus a host of celebs including Shaq, Lindsay Vonn, Aaron Rogers, Rob Gronkowski, Rob Ribbles and more will be making appearances, so it’ll be entertaining.
I have a friend who throws a Shark Week party every year, and if I lived closer, then you know I’d be bringing my Shark Week Food A-game. But since I’m across the state, I’ll try to provide some inspiration for what to make for your own party instead.
