Can I be honest? I consider you a friend, and friends don’t let friends get burned. And that includes sunburns. As the years have gone on, we have started hearing a lot more about skincare, sun damage, skin cancer… all those scary things. And one thing that we all need to be in search of (especially this time of year) is a great sunscreen.
When I go out in the sun, I tend to burn even with sunscreen. The upside is that the burn typically turns into a tan, but no one wants to get burned. And I’ve been known to have some pretty crazy sunburns over the years. My eyes have been sunburned (that story is for a whole new post), I got what is close to a second-degree sunburn when I was outside all day for a sporting event one summer, and I burn fairly easily in general.
The older I get, the more I care about taking care of my skin and that certainly includes finding a kickass sunscreen. And I’m betting you probably relate to this too. After all, cancer (which I hate above all things) seems to constantly be on the news and affecting people we know and love. So if I have any control over preventing the awfulness that is cancer from affecting me, I’m all for it. I’ve lost WAY too many of my favorite people to it.
Now I need to go back in time to January of 2014 when I first read the book The Honest Life by Jessica Alba. I won’t dive into the whole book here, as that is for another post too, but I will say that it was a great read, which really made me think about how I treat my skin, home, food, and life in general. And I also started trying the products from her company The Honest Company at that time too… and I’ve been hooked ever since.
What I love about Honest Company products is that they are free of all of the nasty toxins, chemicals, etc. that we don’t even realize we’re using in many common products. So you know when you purchase from them, you are in good hands when it comes to using safe products for your family and home. They strive to use natural, non-toxic, plant & mineral based, eco-friendly products.
Back to the sunscreen…There are 3 sunscreens that Honest makes. One is their Honest Sunscreen Lotion, another is their Honest Sunscreen Spray, and finally they have the Honest Sunscreen Stick, which I haven’t tried yet but plan to next month. All three are SPF 30 and they are also all-natural broad spectrum mineral-based protection for our skin. They use a non-nano zinc oxide based sunscreen formula. Also each sunscreen is water-resistant (for a recommended number of minutes until you reapply), and most important to me, they are hypoallergenic. Definitely click the links for each product to get all the details on them.
I can attest that this stuff works! When I went on a recent float trip, I just knew I was going to be scorched! After all, it would be the first time this season that I spent such a long time outside and also in water. I took the sunscreen spray with me and it worked great. First off, the lid twists to lock, so I didn’t have to worry about spraying sunscreen all over our raft, snacks, etc…. I’m clumsy like that. And it was so easy to spray on when I was needing more protection from the sun throughout the float. Since it’s mineral-based I’ve learned that it sprays on fairly white, but if you just rub it into the skin and apply it liberally, you’ll be all set. I’m happy to report that I was one of the few people who left that trip without a major burn!
As for the sunscreen lotion, I use it pretty much daily. From what I’ve noticed the sunscreens don’t have a super sunscreen-y scent, which is awesome. My favorite way to protect my face is to add a small amount to my moisturizer in the mornings when I know I may be out in the sun that day. After golfing outside for a minimum 3 hours at least once a week, this has worked so well for me. And still I remain burn free this season. (Seriously you guys, this is a major win in my skin journey!)
I know I’ve written a lot about sunscreen here, but we have to remember to take care of the skin we have. As a kid I LOVED being tan and laying out at the pool and competing with my sister to see who was darker each day of the Summer. But now, I’m happy being pasty-white if that means it decreases my odds of skin cancer. But since avoiding the sun and outdoors would mean avoiding activities I really enjoy, I need sun protection I can count on. Keep in mind that I can only tell you how this sunscreen has worked for me personally. I find that I’m tanner with little to no burn when I actively use the Honest sunscreen products.
I really hope this post was helpful to you. When trying to find organic, pure, natural products that work, it can be a serious challenge most days. And I love the Honest brand and what they stand for. If you want to learn more about their bundles and give them a try like I did, click this link. It’s been an awesome company and their customer service is fabulous. They sell bath & body products, cleaning products, vitamins, and a whole slew of goodies for babies and new mamas. They offer 3 different bundle options, depending on what type of products you like, and this is hands down the cheapest way to purchase items, and is how I’ve chosen to buy from them. Some of their products are also available in a growing number of retail stores like Target, Whole Foods, Nordstrom, as well as many other locations.
Stay tuned for more blog posts, as I have no doubt that I’ll be featuring more of their products soon. I just love them so much!! In the meantime…Happy sunscreen-ing!
